Moksha Jetley

We’ve all known or heard of at least one woman who has had to endure hardships in life after “her man left her”. But, Moksha Jaitely isn’t here to gain anybody’s sympathy because of what happened to her in her personal life.

She fled her home when she was physically abused by her in-laws after giving birth to a girl, and soon realised that a woman trying to earn her living all by herself was a concept most men weren’t comfortable with. She soon decided to pay attention to the dusted-under-the-carpet hobbies that were gnawing at her conscience by then. Riding being the foremost.

It’s been seven years since she has been organising biking tours for foreign tourists who share her love for adventure.

Nidhi Tiwari,  Rashmi Koppar and Dr Soumya Goyal

Nidhi and Smita Rajaram together founded Women Beyond Boundaries. The vision of Women Beyond Boundaries is to plan and execute road journeys that would enable, empower and encourage women drivers and travellers to new places.

Nidhi who conceptualized the whole journey of the three to London from Delhi, was the only driver in the group. She has done a lot of off-the-road jeeping, long distance and high altitude driving and has a volume of outdoor and jeeping experience.

Nidhi says, “Currently, there are very few women who undertake long distance or off road driving trips. While there are many women drivers in our country, unfortunately, most of the driving is restricted to dropping children to school or driving to the work place. When it comes to longer drives (like when on a holiday), it’s often the men who drive. So, I guess women not undertaking such trips is also a matter of opportunity.”

Pallavi Fauzdar

She will be the first woman biker to make it into the Limca Book of Records for covering the highest number of Himalayan mountain passes, all over 5,000 above sea. When she is not biking, she is a sought-after fashion designer.

Mother of two boys, Pallavi Fauzdar, 35, from New Delhi, has some unique achievements. Fauzdar rides an Avenger and has travelled to several cities. She has also travelled to the Himalayas in a span of 16 days. She said she had been passionate about biking for several years and the travel bug had bitten her early. She also feels that the familiar stereotypes about the “dangers” for women travelling alone need to be busted.

Women want to come out and explore the world and their lives as they wish to, but the lack of confidence and support from their family members and the society stops them from chasing their dreams. On this special occasion of Mother’s Day, we need to ensure that mothers around the world feel special every day. They must follow their heart and do what they want. As Charlotte Bronte rightly said, “I am no bird; no net ensnares me. I am a free human being with an independent will.” She should be free and cheerful.
